Poodle (Standard)

10 - 18 Years

Whether Standard, Miniature, or Toy, and regardless of color—black, white, or apricot—the Poodle stands as one of the true aristocrats of the dog world. Beneath its curly, low-allergen coat lies an elegant, athletic dog and a versatile companion suited for all lifestyles and seasons. Poodles come in three size varieties: Standards stand over 15 inches at the shoulder; Miniatures measure 15 inches or less; and Toys do not exceed 10 inches. Despite the size differences, all three share the same balanced build and proportions. In the show ring, Poodles are often presented in the elaborate Continental clip, while most pet owners prefer the simpler Sporting clip, which follows the clean outline of the square, well-muscled body. Set aside outdated stereotypes—Poodles are energetic, athletic, and exceptionally intelligent dogs with remarkable versatility. The Standard Poodle, with its greater size and strength, is the most all-around athlete of the group, but all Poodles are highly trainable and capable of excelling in a wide range of activities.

Welsh Springer Spaniel

12 - 15 Years

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a lively, medium-sized sporting dog known for its cheerful temperament, versatility in the field, and affectionate nature at home. Equally admired for its striking appearance, this breed ranks among the oldest of Britain’s sporting spaniels. Standing between 17 and 19 inches at the shoulder, the Welsh Springer is often described as being of an ideal, practical size—larger and more powerful than the Cocker Spaniel, yet more compact than the English Springer. Two defining features set the breed apart: its distinctly tapered head and its bold red-and-white coat. More than just visually appealing, the coat is dense, weather-resistant, and protective, allowing the Welsh Springer Spaniel to perform confidently across varied terrains and climates.

Brussels Griffon

12 - 15 Years

Weighing no more than 12 pounds, the Brussels Griffon is a remarkably expressive toy breed with a personality far larger than its size suggests. Often described as almost human in character, this sensitive and devoted companion is best suited to attentive, discerning adults. Intelligent, loyal, and amusingly self-important, the Griff brings outsized charm to any household. The Brussels Griffon offers a huge personality in a compact body ranging from 5 to 15 pounds. One glance into its large, soulful, human-like eyes is enough to win hearts instantly. The breed appears in four colors—red, black and reddish-brown (known as belge), black and tan, and black—and comes in either a smooth coat, similar to a Pug, or a rough coat resembling that of a Schnauzer. The Griff’s black muzzle, beard, and whiskers earned it the nickname “bearded dog” in traditional folk songs. Combined with its expressive eyes and short muzzle framed by a mustache and beard, the breed has been likened to a thoughtful, world-weary philosopher. Compact and sturdy, the Brussels Griffon moves with a confident, purposeful trot. Alert, sociable, and easy to train, Griffs are playful and energetic but also sensitive. Their small size and delicate nature make them less suitable for rough play with children. Deeply attached to their chosen human, they do not tolerate loneliness well and prefer to stay close, offering years of affection, humor, and companionship.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

12 - 14 Years

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is the smallest of the AKC retriever breeds, yet it is overflowing with intelligence, affection, and a strong desire to please. Known for its boundless enthusiasm, a Toller will happily play fetch for hours and still be ready for more. This compact gundog stands ideally between 18 and 19 inches at the shoulder. Its signature feature is a striking crimson coat, ranging from golden red to deep copper, often accented with white markings. Strong, agile, and well-balanced, the Toller is truly a medium dog in size, bone structure, and coat length. Almond-shaped eyes convey an alert and eager expression. Energetic and athletic by nature, Tollers need regular outlets for their high energy, including hunting, hiking, camping, and especially swimming—a task they excel at thanks to their webbed feet. Intelligent, affectionate, and visually striking, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever makes a wonderful companion, but only for owners with the time and energy to keep this lively and driven dog happily occupied.

Tibetan Terrier

15 - 16 Years

Known as the “Holy Dog of Tibet,” the Tibetan Terrier is an ancient watchdog and companion closely associated with Buddhist monasteries. This small-to-medium-sized breed is distinguished by its abundant coat, unique “snowshoe” feet, and a temperament that is affectionate, sensitive, and intelligent. Resembling its smaller relative, the Lhasa Apso, the Tibetan Terrier occupies the lower range of medium-sized dogs, standing around 15 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 20 and 24 pounds. One of the breed’s defining features is its luxurious double coat, with a soft, woolly undercoat and a long, fine outer coat. Particularly distinctive are the breed’s large, flat feet, which evolved over centuries to provide stability and traction on the snowy, mountainous terrain of Tibet.

Chinese Shar-Pei

This ancient and intriguing breed is as captivating as it is demanding. Deeply loyal to its family yet reserved and aloof with strangers, the Chinese Shar-Pei is a distinctive companion and guardian with a strong sense of independence. The Chinese Shar-Pei is a compact, medium-sized dog defined by an extraordinary collection of physical traits. These include a broad “hippopotamus” muzzle, a blue-black tongue, small deeply set eyes with a naturally stern expression, tiny triangular ears, and abundant loose wrinkles around the head, neck, and shoulders. A high-set, tapered tail and a harsh, sandpaper-like coat complete the breed’s unmistakable appearance. The name Shar-Pei literally translates to “sand skin.” Shar-Pei are dignified, intelligent, and self-reliant guardians known for their unwavering loyalty. Naturally suspicious of strangers and other dogs, they are typically calm and composed, but will respond with determination and strength if they perceive a threat. Early training and thorough socialization are essential, as an unsocialized, dominant adult Shar-Pei can become difficult and potentially dangerous to manage.

Australian Cattle Dog

12 - 16 Years

The Australian Cattle Dog is a compact yet powerfully constructed herding breed, widely known as the Blue Heeler, Red Heeler, or Queensland Heeler. With ancestry linked to Australia’s native Dingo, this resilient and determined worker is celebrated for remarkable intelligence—often clever enough to challenge even experienced owners. Standing between 17 and 20 inches at the shoulder, the breed is muscular, sturdy, and impressively agile. Puppies are born white, with their coats gradually developing into either blue-gray or red, both typically accented by distinctive speckled or mottled markings. Bred to manage demanding livestock tasks, the Australian Cattle Dog possesses an intense work ethic and thrives when given purpose. Their stamina, fluid movement, and boundless energy also make them exceptional companions for active lifestyles, including running and outdoor activities. Deeply loyal, highly perceptive, and constantly alert, Australian Cattle Dogs tend to be cautious around strangers. Without sufficient mental stimulation and physical exercise, they may become bored and develop unwanted behaviors. For this reason, owners are strongly encouraged to involve them in structured work, canine sports, or regular training to ensure they remain balanced, focused, and fulfilled.

Beauceron

10 - 12 Years

The Beauceron is an impressive and powerful dog, combining strength with exceptional intelligence, energy, and herding versatility. Often described as having the mind of a Border Collie in a much larger body, this breed is both capable and quick-thinking. Known for its confidence and sensitivity, the Beauceron is valued as a devoted companion and a reliable protector. Muscular, rugged, and large, the Beauceron can stand up to 27.5 inches at the shoulder while maintaining a graceful and well-balanced appearance. The coat is typically deep black with striking red markings, most notably the red feet that earned the breed its French nickname “Bas-Rouge,” meaning “red stockings.” A black, gray, and tan coat variation is also seen. The long, finely sculpted head and dark brown eyes convey an expression admired by enthusiasts as open, steady, and confident. This is not a breed for inexperienced owners, as its strong personality and dominance can overwhelm those without firm leadership. However, when properly trained and well socialized, the Beauceron becomes a calm, dependable watchdog and guardian, particularly gentle and protective toward children, smaller animals, and those in need of defense.

English Foxhound

10 - 13 Years

The English Foxhound is a powerful, galloping hound renowned for exceptional stamina and endurance. Its long legs are straight and robust, supporting a perfectly level back and a notably deep chest. In a hound standing about 24 inches at the shoulder, the chest may measure up to 31 inches in girth, providing ample lung capacity for the demands of a long and exhausting day of hunting. Bred to work in packs and guided primarily by scent, the English Foxhound is gentle and sociable by nature, yet it is rarely kept as a household pet. Its strong, instinctive drive to pursue quarry can dominate its behavior, often outweighing other influences such as training. Ownership of this dignified breed requires an individual who embraces an active lifestyle and appreciates the social and working nature of such hounds. The English Foxhound represents the ideal long sought by dedicated dog breeders, combining beauty, balance, and practical purpose. Its straight, sturdy limbs, level topline, and deep chest create a harmonious structure built for function as much as form. A poet once observed that, aside from ancient Greek statues, few figures unite grace and strength as completely as a well-made Foxhound.

Nederlandse Kooikerhondje

12 - 15 Years

The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a lively, agile, and self-confident breed with a cheerful and alert disposition. At home, it is loyal, easygoing, and friendly, forming close bonds with its family. Outdoors, however, the Kooikerhondje reveals its true sporting nature—keen, quick, resilient, attentive, and full of energy. With ample stamina and determination, this breed enjoys working and approaches tasks with enthusiasm and a happy attitude. Often described as “the little white and orange dog with a big heart,” the Kooikerhondje is a sporty and eye-catching dog featuring a silky, weather-resistant coat of white with red patches. The breed is instantly recognizable by its large ears tipped with black and its richly feathered tail, which it carries and wags with pride. Beneath its attractive appearance lies the solid bone structure of a serious hunting dog, balanced by smooth, flowing lines and a light, springy gait that reflects both elegance and athleticism.

Tibetan Spaniel

12 - 15 Years

Lively, inquisitive, and alert, the Tibetan Spaniel was developed centuries ago to serve as a sentinel on the walls of Tibetan monasteries. Distinguished by a smooth, silky coat and a characteristic “lion’s mane” around the neck, this small breed forms a close, devoted bond with its human companions. With its blunt muzzle, large expressive eyes, flowing neck ruff, and a plumed tail carried gracefully over the back, the Tibetan Spaniel displays a distinctly Tibetan appearance. Despite its name, it is not a spaniel in the Western sense, such as Cocker or Cavalier Spaniels. Instead, the breed reflects ancient Asian canine traditions shared with breeds like the Pekingese, Pug, and Lhasa Apso. Standing about 10 inches at the shoulder, Tibetan Spaniels move with speed and purpose and appear in a wide variety of coat colors and combinations.

Redbone Coonhound

12 - 15 Years

The sleek and athletic Redbone Coonhound is a true American original, known for its calm, gentle, and easygoing nature at home, contrasted by remarkable intensity and determination in the field. The rhythm of a Redbone’s life balances vigorous activity—such as hunting and swimming—with extended periods of rest. Redbones are medium-to-large hound dogs with powerful muscles that ripple beneath a smooth, rich red coat of striking beauty. Their overall appearance suggests a dog carefully sculpted from polished mahogany. The breed’s classic hound head is framed by long ears that reach toward the nose, while soft brown eyes lend a soulful, almost pleading expression. Bred to perform across demanding and rugged terrain, the Redbone Coonhound is fast, sure-footed, and moves with a proud, confident, and purposeful stride.
